KingKong Robotics has officially unveiled Jumper, a new open-source crab robot designed to blend playful exploration with practical utility. Inspired by the agile movements of a crab, Jumper boasts 22 degrees of freedom (DoF), allowing it to walk, jump, and grasp objects with remarkable flexibility.
Compact Design, Exceptional Motion
Despite its compact 400×400×200 mm frame and a weight of just 1.8 kg, Jumper packs 22 high-torque tactile servos. According to the company, the robot can reach a top speed of 0.5 m/s, jump over 400 mm in height, and carry a grasping load of up to 1 kg. Powered by a battery that lasts approximately two hours, Jumper offers ample time for testing, simulation, and real-world tasks.
AI Integration and Boundless Customization
What sets Jumper apart is its AI-driven customization toolkit, available publicly on GitHub. Users can leverage artificial intelligence to design appearances, train motions, and create scenes using simple natural language prompts. For instance, a single sentence can generate a custom 3D shell (exported as a .skin file) or train a stable tripod gait that can be packaged as a playable .app file. The system builds upon advanced simulation tools like DeepMind's MuJoCo.
Versatile Applications: From Home to Industry
The open-source and highly modifiable nature of Jumper means it can be adapted for a wide variety of environments. KingKong Robotics highlights several potential use cases for the AI-powered robot:
Home Chores: Assisting with everyday cleaning and moving small objects around the house.
Pipe Inspection: Navigating narrow, complex pipeline networks to spot potential safety risks.
Industrial Sorting: Grasping and organizing different materials to support efficient production lines.
Smart Agriculture: Moving through fields to support crop monitoring and precise harvesting tasks.
Open-Source Availability and Motion Challenge
True to its maker spirit, Jumper’s blueprints and source code have been released on GitHub, inviting developers, enthusiasts, and newcomers to build and modify the robot themselves. To encourage community participation, KingKong Robotics has also launched the "Crab Robot Open Motion Challenge," offering 100 free Jumper units to creative makers who design striking shells, choreograph playful moves, or develop genuinely useful skills.
Whether for a family project, an educational endeavor, or industrial prototyping, Jumper's swappable shells and open AI development tools make it a highly capable and accessible platform in the modern robotics landscape.
